How to create map files

Begin by setting up your workspace in Google My Maps and defining the overall congregation boundary.

  1. Download your congregation's original boundary KMZ file to your computer.
  2. Go to Google My Maps log in and click Create a New Map.
  3. In the box labeled Untitled layer, click Import.
  4. Select your congregation boundary KMZ file.
Tip: This imported layer is your guide. You will draw your new territories on top of this, then delete this layer at the end.

Precision is key for accurate maps.

  1. Click Add layer in the left menu. Name it "Territories".
  2. Select the Draw a line tool and choose Add line or shape.
  3. Trace the specific territory boundary carefully.
  4. Double-click on your starting point to close the shape.
Critical: Ensure shapes meet exactly at corners. Use the "Show Problems" tool later to find any hidden overlaps.

Correct naming triggers the automatic features of the printer.

  1. Enter the name in format: Number Name (e.g., 10 Riverside).
  2. Automatic Kingdom Hall: If you name a shape Kingdom Hall or Jumba la Ufalme, a KH sticker will be placed automatically at its center. This can later be moved and renamed if needed.
Guidelines:
  • Do not use dashes, dots, or symbols (e.g., avoid "12 - Riverside").
  • Use neutral geographic names only.
  • Do not name a territory by the name of a living person.
⚠️ DANGER: The "Accidental Slide"
Clicking and dragging inside a selected shape will move the entire polygon.
  1. Undo: Immediately press Ctrl + Z (Windows) or Cmd + Z (Mac).
  2. Edit Nodes: Click the territory border once to drag the white dots and adjust corners.
  1. Delete the original "Boundary" guide layer so only your territories remain.
  2. Click the three vertical dots next to the Map Title.
  3. Select Export to KML/KMZ.
  4. Select Entire map and ensure format is KMZ.
  5. Click Download.

Before downloading, choose the map style that best fits your needs:

  • Classic: A free open source map that almost always works for most maps.
    Advantages: Unlimited use.
Disadvantages: Access may be slower during high demand, and data is not always as well presented.
  • Modern: The free level of a commercial app.
Advantages: Typically clearer and more consistent data.
Disadvantages: Limited downloads, which may stop working toward the end of the calendar month.
Note: This software balances the limitations and strengths of both map sources. If one style does not give good results for your area, switch to the other and compare. As a last resort, you can modify the saved PNG using a free photo editor
Switch styles using the dropdown menu in the top control bar.

You have total control over the blue map stickers:

  1. Automatic: A KH sticker will be placed in the centre of any territory named Kingdom Hall or Jumba la Ufalme.
  2. Important: the icon will be placed in the center of of the territory. Zoom in, then move it to the correct place.
  3. Manual Placement: You can place multiple stickers. Click the 🏛️ Place KH button, then click anywhere on the map to drop a new sticker.>

Important: Do NOT send PNG files to a printer via WhatsApp or similar apps. These apps reduce quality, which can result in blurry or pixelated prints. Send files using email or a file-sharing service instead.
File Sending:
  • Gmail can send files up to about 25MB.
  • If your file is larger, use Google Drive or similar services.
Printing Sizes (simple guide):
  • A4: Standard paper (like normal office printing).
  • A3: About twice the size of A4 (good for small posters).
  • Banner (up to 1 meter wide): Large wall map. The printer will scale the height automatically.
What to tell the printer:

  • “Use the highest quality setting.”
  • “Print this at [A4 / A3 / 1 meter wide].”
